Varinel Inc. is a development stage pharmaceutical company developing novel drugs for treatment of neurological diseases, especially neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as well as age-related macular degeneration. Varinel has built a strong technology base through close relationships and in-licensing programs with world-class academic investigators and commercial partners. Varinel has focused its initial product development efforts on the Company’s first lead compounds, including VK-28, HLA-20 and M30, which have core structures that selectively chelate intracellular free iron, scavenge free radicals, and are anti-apoptotic. Moreover, M30 selectively inhibits brain monoamine oxidases A and B, two enzymes proven to be important drug targets for treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, and depression. The compounds were jointly developed at the Technion Israel Research Institute in the laboratory of Professor Moussa B.H. Youdim, and at the Weizmann Institute by Professors Abraham Warshawsky and Matityahu Fridkin.
