Lilly's Phenotypic Drug Discovery program (PD2)

Dear WIS Scientist,

Yeda, the technology transfer company of the Weizmann Institute of Science, joined Lilly's program for Phenotypic Drug Discovery (PD2) and hereby invites you to evaluate the therapeutic potential of your compounds.

The PD2 initiative is a unique opportunity for the WIS investigators to submit proprietary compounds for potential screening in Lilly's phenotypic assay panel. The PD2 process is designed to identify compounds that modulate cellular processes by screening novel molecules in disease-relevant assays.

The PD2 screening panel is comprised of five modules which are relevant to therapeutic areas of long term strategic interest to Lilly, including oncology, neurological disorders, and metabolic diseases. Each assay module is composed of a primary phenotypic screening assay, followed by relevant secondary biochemical and cellular follow-up assays that further define the compound’s activity profile and early potential for additional optimization.

The goal of PD2 is to stimulate the testing of compounds that represent novel chemical diversity and molecular hypotheses that are thoughtfully considered in light of the biology associated with each assay.

Through the PD2 interface, Yeda securely submits structures of the compounds to be evaluated for novelty and reasonable drug-like characteristics. Should a molecule be selected by Lilly, investigators would be invited, subject to Yeda's approval, to submit the physical sample to Lilly for testing in the PD2 panel. In exchange for the submission, Lilly provides a full report of the biological data generated. Once testing is completed, Lilly evaluates the data and shall have a first right to determine whether to initiate discussions on a possible collaboration with Yeda.

How does the PD2 program work?

  • Yeda, joined Lilly's PD2 program for drug discovery and received affiliation codes and login information for the PD2 website
  • Participation in the PD2 program is done through Yeda and requires authorization by Yeda. Each scientist will be required to agree to Lilly's term of use.
  • Compound structure information will be securely submitted through the web interface, where a Lilly proprietary cheminformatics evaluation tool shall determine if the structure is of potential interest to Lilly
  • For selected compounds, Lilly may request a physical sample of the compound for testing in the phenotypic cell-based assays for non-commercial purposes. Yeda, after consulting with the scientist, may choose not to disclose the structure.  At that point, Yeda is under no further obligation to Lilly
  • If the compound is disclosed by Yeda, Lilly shall provide Yeda a data report with a complete biological profile of the compound across the assay modules
  • Pursuant to the receipt of the results from Lilly, Yeda shall grant Lilly a first right to exclusively negotiate a license agreement or a research collaboration agreement on commercial terms
  • At all times Yeda shall maintain complete control of the decision to move to the next step in the process if an opportunity is presented
  • If there is no agreement within a defined time period, Yeda can allow the use of the data without any-strings-attached in publication or grant proposals, or to further refine structural hypotheses, all of which may advance scientific discovery
